Open Learn Lab

The Lansing Community College Open Learn Lab site is still under construction, however, my class was tasked with creating logos for it. Each student created a logo that they felt best represented the purpose of the site, which is to share ideas and make online resources more accessible.

Once all of the logos were finalized and submitted, we waited to hear back from the committee. They decided to go with my design, so once the site is up and running, my logo and banner will be the face of LCC's Open Learn Lab.

To start this project, my class had a guest in one of our Zoom lectures. The man who is leading the project talked to us about his goals for the site, and gave us a few keywords and phrases that embodied his mission. One of the phrases he said, "running errands for ideas" stuck out to me. Because of this, I chose to make my logo a lightbulb, one of the most common icons for 'ideas.'

I knew that I wanted to make the 'O' out of the shape of the lightbulb, but that proved to be something that I would struggle with throughout the design process. I also wanted to keep blue in the color scheme as it is one of LCC's representative colors. I did experiment with yellow, but I remember telling my professor that I thought that yellow was too predictable. I ended up choosing a cool color scheme to compliment the blue shade I had chosen.

When I submitted my final design, I had used the top right design, but upon receiving further feedback, I ended with the bottom right design. The issue with the top design was that we were worried that the viewer would read it is 'pen' rather than 'open.' To remedy this, I opted to create a thicker 'O' outline and make it more prominent in the design.
